Resumen: |
In The Great Fear in Latin America, John Gerassi concludes that unless we change our current Latin American policy, unless we realistically face and accept the choice that confronts us, we shall not only see the Far Left win out-we shall accelerate its victory. Charging that our Alliance for Progress prevents true reforms-that those who benefit from it are almost always those in favor of the status quo-Gerassi views the present governments and societies of Latin America as "decadent, corrupt, immoral, and generally unsalvageable." He asserts that revolution is not only inevitable but necessary for "the reconquest of Latin America by Latin Amer-icans" and, above all, that the United States must radically change its traditional policy toward its neighbors to the south to preserve any kind of meaningful unity of interest in the Western Hemis-phere.
"The author [believes] that nothing can be done to save the status quo in the South American coun-tries.... He believes, however, that South America can be saved if the United States steps Into each country with a realistic program of aid that will build up the nations as self-respecting, self-gov-erning, and self-sufficient communities."
