Preface
Introduction to Government, part of the HarperCollins Outline series, is intended as a supplement to the main American government textbooks. both softcover and hardcover, currently used in senior high schools and at the freshman level in colleges and universities throughout the nation. Introduction to Government provides the "essentials" about American political institutions, leaders, and concepts so that the student can better comprehend related materials found in comprehensive textbooks. Real-life political examples are disseminated throughout in order to reinforce sub-stantive material. This new title covers the three branches of government, federalism, public opinion, the media, parties, interest groups, the bureau-cracy, voting, campaigns, and elections. There is also a chapter on public policy. The book contains a glossary of key terms important to the study of American government, as well as relevant appendices. This work can also serve as an effective review device to study for major course examinations.
I am grateful to Jonathon E. Brodman and Fred N. Grayson for their invaluable technical assistance and encouragement extended to me during this project's evolution. Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Sharon, whose support, patience, and computer skills were all essential to the book's completion.
