Ο n January 24, 1996, a group of highly qualified scholars from several institutions of higher educa-tion met in Tampa, Florida, under the auspices of the Center for Inter-American Studies of Saint Leo College and the World Trade Center Tampa Bay, an event also sponsored by the Tampa International Trade Fair Advisory Committee, with the objective of presenting a well documented, balanced, albeit diverse, assessment of the present political and economic situation in Cuba and its influence on the process of the devel-opment of a sound foreign policy by the government of the United States. During the symposium it was taken into ac-count that any approach to the Cuban problem by the U. S. would eventually have an impact on the rest of Latin America in regard to its relations with the United States.

The symposium was the first of a series of events that will be implemented by the Center for Inter-American Studies to achieve its goal of being a forum for the discussions of the problems affecting the political, economical, commercial, cul-tural, and religious aspects of inter-American relations. It was followed by a visit and lecture by the former president of Hon-duras, Rafael Leonardo Callejas, in April 1996, and it will be continued by a symposium on the strategic challenges to the U.S. after the Cold War, with emphasis on the Latin American region. |
