Function in English
Function in English is the first comprehensive work to classify the English language in functional terms.
It describes 140 functions (saying sorry, thanking, disagreeing, requesting, etc) using over 3,000 exponents. These exponents are in turn classified according to three levels of formality: neutral, informal and formal. There are also cross-references to an index of grammatical structures so that the student can produce a given exponent in its full variety of grammatical forms. This unique book is both a reference and a practice book that can be used for self-study and in the classroom. Each unit ends with practice exercises and a key and there is an extra section at the end of the book which practises all the functions together. An alphabetical index of the key words provides an alternative method of entry into the book |
